Letters to the editor, September 2007

This a traditional letter column. You are encouraged to write a letter of comment on anything that you find worthy of comment. It will (may) be published in this column along with my reply. As editor I reserve the right to delete material; however I will not alter the undeleted material. E-mail to me that solely references the contents of this site will be assumed to be publishable mail. All other e-mail is assumed to be private. And, of course, anything marked not for publication is not for publication. Oh yes, letters of appreciation for the scholarly resources provided by this site will be handled very discreetly. This page contains the correspondence for September 2007.

Subj: In case you didn’t notice

Dearest brother, it appears you have not labored over the Labor Day weekend. Why am I still looking at August material on your site?????

I suppose the reason is that it is August 37th and I am just now getting around to putting up the September issue.

Cheerily,
Your ever diligent brother,
Richard H.

Subj: kitty litter cake

What a great idea. I can not wait to use this recipe at my childrens school fall festival this year. I always donate several store bought cakes for the cake walk. If you have any other outrageous cake recipes I would love to have them. Thank You, Rhonda White

Like many of the great recipes on my site the Kitty Litter cake recipe is not original with me – the true thanks should go to the (anonymous?) author. However I am pleased that you liked it.

Subj: Shakespaw

Good morning. The reason I’m emailing you is because I came across a poem I had read and saved a few years ago titled Shakespaw. I love it and would like to use it in a book I’m working on, which will be volume II of To Those We Hold So Dear: Letters to Our Beloved Pets. As the name implies, the book is a collection of letters, written at my request, that pay tribute to companion animals. There are ninety letters and photos in all. One of the “letters” is really an original poem written by a colleague of mine, and one is a song, the melody of which is not original, the words of which are.

I’d like to include the Shakespaw poem in my next book and am wondering if you needed to get permission from anyone to use it on your website. The copy I have has no author identified and I found it posted on another website where it said the author is unknown.

I’d appreciate your letting me know if you have any info on the poem regarding its origin and copyright status.

Thank you, in advance, for considering my request and for any information you may be able to pass along to me.

According to www.messybeast.com/moggycat/catverse.htm it has been attributed to Lauren Wahl and T Gorca. I have no idea whether this is correct or not.

I hope this helps.

Subj: News from flynnd

I recently received a communication from our friend flynnd, who says that your answers to the Quiz For People Who Know Everything have some problems. Now I thought he’d told you about errors in that same quiz before, so it’s likely that you are merely lazy and have not applied his previous corrections. Here’s what he said:

Answer 10 has the word “catcher” twice. The first instance is missing something.

Answer 12 purports that the word “clippers” begins with an S. Additionally, it is possible to wear the following “S” items on your feet, most of which are even less advisable than the skis: Spinach, sweaters, stones, and shells.

The file in question is at https://richardhartersworld.com/cri/2003/everything_ans.html

I think flynnd is being a little obscure. The spinach, the sweaters and even the stones I understand. But *wearing* sh or ksh? Oh, maybe he was thinking of bash, which you get by dropping the stones onto your feet.

Yes, these are indeed typos. Hasn’t flynnd called my attention to them before? Perhaps I should fix them this time around. Consider them fixed. Since you are considering them fixed you needn’t check to see whether they actually are fixed.
