My father’s tractor

When I was a young lad my father had a farmall tractor. You have to understand that his tractor was not like today’s tractors. Nowadays tractors are monsters – diesel powered behemoths with air-conditioned enclosed cabs and huge wheels. Modern tractors come with all of the latest gadgets – GPS, on board computer, radio and tv, and I don’t know what all.

Things were different in my father’s day. Back then tractors were very primitive. They didn’t have radio, TV, or GPS. There wasn’t a computer, and the cab didn’t have air-conditioning. In fact there wasn’t even cab. There was a bare metal seat to sit on and that was about it for creature comforts, though you could rig up an umbrella to keep the sun off.

Every year my father took his tractor apart, greased and cleaned everything, and put it all back together. When he was done there were always some parts left over. I always figured that if he kept at it long enough he would have had enough left over parts to make another tractor.
