Saving lives with physics

When I used to teach physics, there was a story (probably apocryphal) that a premed once asked why on earth he should learn physics. The professor’s response, “Because it saves lives”. To the incredulous “How?”, the professor answered “By keeping stupid people out of medical school.”.
